In the last week of our project Hailee and I had a few bumps in the road, at one point we were sitting on the sidewalk, alone, outside Mt. Vernon High School with over a thousand cans of food. However, we had several local business donate gift cards, the community responded well to our event, and the schools donated a plethora of items. The Hancock County Food Pantry received over 2,000 cans of food from the event. I learned how to adjust to various situations, I learned how to communicate with significant individuals, I learned how to organize groups of volunteers, and I learned to accept defeat and continue on. This project helped me grow not only as a student, but as an effective and beneficial citizen.

In presenting our preparing for the project proposal we had to consider more logistics than we had thought existed. We had to consider where we would put all the food we collected, how we would transport the food to the food pantry, and how we would get the word out.
To address the issue of advertisement we contacted the New Palestine Report and had an article advertising the event in the newspaper. Additionally, we posted flyers in local businesses and distributed handouts to interested individuals. Social media outlets like twitter, facebook, and instagram also played a major role in spreading the message. Being given total freedom in school was a foreign concept until this class. Of all the ideas floating through my head one stood out, using the competitive drive of our school rivalry football game, and the undying support of NPHS Dragons fans to help our community. The Hancock County Food Pantry serves over 600 families each month. They run entirely off donations, and the months between the major holidays tend to be months where nothing is donated so the timing was perfect. Hailee Holberton, the co-founder of this event, and I wanted to help combat a global problem on a local level.
